Russia's "Doomsday Submarine" sets sail loaded with nuclear torpedoes

In theory, an explosion off an enemy coastline could cause widespread destruction and potentially generate a powerful tsunami.

According to the British Telegraph, the Poseidon is estimated to be capable of traveling more than 6,000 miles (nearly 10,000 kilometers) and diving to depths of approximately 1,000 meters.

It is precisely this combination of long range, autonomous operation and nuclear capability that makes the submarine a worrying development for Western military planners.

The testing of the Khabarovsk comes amid renewed threats from Moscow toward the United Kingdom.

Russian propagandists have in recent days called on Putin to use the Poseidon against Britain in response to British support for Ukraine.

One of the most extreme statements came from Russian television host Vladimir Solovyov. “Give the British three days to learn how to breathe underwater, then hit them with a Poseidon,” he said.

The Russian Embassy soon issued its own warning, saying that the more London helps Kyiv, the higher the price it will have to pay.

British authorities rejected the Russian threats and said they would not abandon their support for Ukraine.

Nevertheless, despite the alarming capabilities attributed to the Poseidon, experts interviewed by the Telegraph believe the likelihood of it actually being used against Britain is very low.

If Russia were to launch a nuclear attack on Britain, Moscow would face a response from the UK's Trident nuclear weapons system.
