Death toll from devastating Indonesia earthquake rises to 100

The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia’s Flores region has risen to 100. Another 1,603 people were injured, while more than 180,000 remain displaced, the National Disaster Management Agency said today.

According to the statement, many of the additional deaths from the earthquake that struck Indonesia on August 15 were people who had initially suffered severe injuries and later died while receiving treatment, Xinhua reported.

A total of 6,409 aftershocks have been recorded, including 33 with a magnitude of at least 5.0, the strongest of which measured 6.2.

Authorities said aftershocks could continue for three to four weeks after the main earthquake, although their frequency and intensity are expected to gradually decline.
