Key decision in Ukraine: First approval since the start of the war
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said that the country’s government has, for the first time since the start of the war with Russia, approved a “first transparent mechanism” that will allow the export of weapons.
“For the first time, a clear procedure has been established that sets unified rules for the state, manufacturers, and partners regarding arms exports,” Fedorov said in a Telegram post, according to Kyiv Independent.
Although a large number of innovative companies in the military technology sector have emerged since the Russian invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian government had previously restricted their exports abroad. However, Ukrainian defense companies have meanwhile begun producing more than the country’s domestic needs, prompting firms to call on the government to allow exports so they can remain financially sustainable and expand.
Fedorov said the mechanism will “ensure that Ukrainian manufacturers have clear rules for working with international partners, that they can increase production, attract investment, and at the same time guarantee the priority fulfillment of the needs of Ukraine’s defense forces.”
Exports of weapons and technology from Ukraine will be limited to 27 countries that have signed the Drone Agreement, an initiative led by the Ukrainian government, including 15 NATO member states.
