Man arrested in Knjaževac after burning grass caused a fire that destroyed a building

Police in Knjaževac arrested N.T. (61), from the area around Knjaževac, on suspicion of burning dry grass, after which the fire spread to a neighboring plot and engulfed a building that was completely destroyed, as well as a vineyard, and a motor cultivator.

A statement from the Zaječar Police Department said that the arrest was carried out by members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on the orders of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Zaječar.

The suspect is charged with the criminal offense of causing general danger.

He is suspected of burning dry grass yesterday on his property near Knjaževac, after which the fire spread to a neighboring plot and engulfed a building that was completely destroyed, as well as a vineyard, a motor cultivator and other agricultural machinery.

The fire, in which no one was injured, was extinguished by firefighters from the Knjaževac Fire and Rescue Unit.

The suspect has been placed in custody for up to 48 hours and will be brought before the prosecutor’s office along with a criminal complaint.

The Zaječar Police Department also urged all citizens to act responsibly, comply with the law and exercise extreme caution when using open flames, given the heat wave, which could further increase the risk of fires starting and spreading in open areas.
