According to reports from Russian Telegram channels citing local residents, a warehouse belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, also known as the “Russian Amazon,” was damaged in the attack. The Kyiv Independent reported that this marks a continuation of Ukrainian strikes targeting the company.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that air defenses had shot down at least 197 Ukrainian drones over the wider Moscow region. According to unofficial reports, more than 600 drones were launched toward the region.
The Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova Plus, which monitors the situation on the ground, reported that Russian air defenses struck a residential building in Pavlovsky Posad, about 67 kilometers from Moscow, while attempting to intercept the drones. A fire broke out on the roof of the building.
Fires were also reportedly reported at an aluminum plant in Moscow Oblast and at a private home in Lyubertsy, a city on the outskirts of Moscow.
Videos have also emerged from the town of Staraya Kupavna, 23 kilometers east of Moscow, showing residents fleeing and cars speeding through the streets as explosions can be heard in the background.
The exact extent of the damage remains unknown, and The Kyiv Independent notes that it could not independently verify the reports or the claims made by Russian officials.
Frequent attacks on Russia
The attack came just two days after one of Ukraine’s largest drone strikes on the Moscow region, on August 16, in which a Wildberries warehouse was also damaged.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, saying that this was the company’s largest facility, covering 250,000 square meters. Ukrainian attacks on and around Moscow have become more frequent in recent months, which has been linked to advances in the development of Ukrainian drones.
Ukraine regularly targets military infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, as well as territories occupied by Russia. The purpose of these attacks is to weaken Russia’s warfighting capabilities.
Why is Wildberries a target?
Wildberries also sells military equipment on its website, including drone components and body armor. Ukrainian sources say the marketplace has been used to supply military-related goods, including drones, drone accessories and other equipment.
The European Union sanctioned the company’s banking arm in July, citing its contribution to Russia’s state budget. Wildberries also plays an important role in the Russian economy and in supplying the population. The company is Russia’s largest online marketplace and a major part of the country’s retail and logistics infrastructure.
