Radio Free Asia Tibetan reported that a source familiar with the incident identified the man as Lobga Rangzen, noting that his identity had not been independently verified at the time of publication.

In a Facebook post circulating shortly after the incident, Tibetan activist Jangdung Tenzin wrote that “Loga Rangzen self-immolated in a powerful act of protest for Tibet,” initially stating that he was in critical condition and asking the public to pray for his survival and recovery.

According to Tibetan-language reports and livestream footage reviewed by the Tibetan Journal, Lobga Rangzen had been live on Facebook several times in the hours leading up to the act. He reportedly spoke about the suffering of Tibetans under Chinese rule and called on Tibetans to take action.

The Tibetan Journal said it chose not to publish the most explicit parts of the livestream.

The location of the act, directly outside the UN headquarters, carries deep political significance. For decades, Tibetans in exile have appealed to the United Nations and the wider international community to address China’s policies in Tibet, including restrictions on religious freedom, language, movement, cultural life, and political expression.

The self-immolation comes amid renewed concern among Tibetans over China’s tightening control in Tibet and growing international criticism of Beijing’s policies toward Tibetan identity, language, and religious institutions. In recent years, Tibetan advocacy groups have repeatedly called on world governments and UN bodies to take stronger action regarding human rights violations in Tibet.

Self-immolation has become one of the most tragic and extreme forms of Tibetan political protest since 2009. According to data from the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), 159 Tibetans have self-immolated in Tibet and China since 2009, with 127 known to have died as a result. ICT also records 10 self-immolations by Tibetans in exile.

The Free Tibet organization states that more than 150 people have self-immolated since March 2009 in protest against Chinese rule in Tibet, with the wave peaking in 2012.

The incident in New York marks one of the most internationally visible Tibetan protests and self-immolations in recent years, taking place not in Tibet or South Asia but in the heart of New York City, outside a global institution from which Tibetans have long sought international intervention.
