The document was signed on August 10 by Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, according to the Greek portal pronews.gr, and its contents came to light during a parliamentary debate.

A lawmaker had initially asked the Turkish Defense Ministry for information about Greek military activities in the Aegean and the strengthening of defense cooperation between Greece and Israel.

“We are preparing for every possible development”

In its response, the Turkish Defense Ministry said that necessary preparations are being carried out and measures are being taken for any possible developments that may arise in the region.

Specifically, according to the document, Turkish authorities are examining “all kinds of developments, including possible crises, tensions and war,” and are coordinating efforts with all relevant state agencies.

The report is particularly significant because it shows that Ankara is officially not ruling out the possibility of a major military crisis in its contingency planning.

Greek military activities in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean are highlighted in particular, with the Turkish side saying it is closely monitoring Greece’s military movements, weapons programs and relevant statements.

In other words, pronews.gr reports, the Turkish Defense Ministry views the strengthening of Greece’s defense capabilities as a factor that is now part of Ankara’s broader operational and strategic planning.

“We are closely monitoring” Greece and Israel

Another particularly notable part of the response to the lawmaker concerned military cooperation between Greece and Israel.

The Turkish ministry acknowledged that the two countries have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years in the areas of defense industry, military training, exercises and technology.

At the same time, Ankara noted that the international security environment is changing and that the region is characterized by growing uncertainty and new risks.

In this context, the Turkish Defense Ministry is said to be closely monitoring military cooperation between Greece and Israel.

Turkey also stresses that it does not automatically consider cooperation between the two countries problematic, as long as it is conducted in accordance with international law, the principles of good-neighborly relations and alliance commitments, and provided that it “is not directed against third countries.”

Cyprus also in focus

Ankara stresses that the strengthening of cooperation between Greece and Israel has not changed its position regarding the occupied territories, nor Turkey’s approach to the issue of “Cyprus’s security.”

The document once again emphasizes Turkey’s determination to protect, “under any circumstances,” the security, rights and interests of both Turkey itself and the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

This statement takes on particular significance when viewed in the context of the earlier remarks about preparations for crises, tensions and war, pronews.gr reports, adding that this places Cyprus within the same strategic framework as the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, while Ankara links developments in the region to broader shifts in the military balance of power.
