Free textbooks to be provided by mid-September at the latest

Ćilerdžić said that nearly 920,000 textbook units have been secured and that the Serbian government has allocated one billion dinars for the project, which is being implemented for the fifth consecutive year.

“The distribution of textbooks to schools is nearing completion. The schools will, as part of their organization of work, contact parents and distribute the textbooks according to the established lists and the documentation submitted to the Ministry. Whether this will happen before September 1 or during the first week, when parent meetings are usually held, is up to the individual schools. But by the end of the first week, or the second week at the latest, all students covered by this project will receive free textbooks,” Ćilerdžić told TV Prva.

He added that implementation of the project began in March, while the necessary documentation was collected through the end of April, according to the established categories of students eligible for free textbooks.

“Students from socially vulnerable categories are eligible, including recipients of financial social assistance, as well as students following individualized education programs who require adapted textbooks. The program also covers students educated in one of the languages of the eight national minorities, students who are the third or subsequent child in their family, students who have lost one of their parents, and students with specific medical conditions supported by the required health documentation,” Ćilerdžić said.

He noted that free textbooks represent significant assistance to parents at the start of the new school year.

“This is a serious and responsible policy of the Republic of Serbia and significant assistance to parents who face expenses for textbook sets and school supplies. The state and the Ministry of Education are trying to provide support, particularly to the categories that need it most,” Ćilerdžić said.
