Vucic meets tennis star Jelena Jankovic at Presidential Office: "She will be a promoter of EXPO 2027"

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić received former world No. 1 tennis player Jelena Janković at the Presidential Palace in Belgrade.

Vučić said he was honored to welcome the successful tennis player, whom he described as a source of pride for Serbia.

“Jelena will be a promoter of EXPO 2027,” Vučić said at the beginning of the meeting.

He stressed that EXPO 2027 is the most important and will be the biggest event of next year.

“Thank you for all those wonderful results and for fighting for Serbia — both during those 17 weeks when you were ranked No. 1 in the WTA rankings and during the times when you weren’t,” Vučić said, adding that he had heard she had recently welcomed a baby girl. He wished her daughter good health and success, hoping she would grow up to be as successful as her mother.

Jelena thanked the president and said she was very proud, adding that she would do her best to represent Serbia in the best possible way.

“It is a great honor to be here with you today and to become an ambassador for EXPO 2027,” Janković said during a meeting with President Aleksandar Vučić.

She thanked the president and the EXPO team for their trust and for inviting her to be part of what she described as a major undertaking.

“Throughout my career, I have tried to represent my country in the best possible way, from the heart, with great pride and great love,” she said at the Presidential Palace.

For Janković, the theme of EXPO 2027, “Play for Humanity,” means finding what unites us despite our differences and being part of something greater than ourselves.

“And now the world is coming to us, to Serbia, to discover a country of world champions, scientists and artists, a country with a strong culture and tradition. And perhaps what is most recognizable and most beautiful about us — our hospitality and our big hearts,” Janković said.

She added that she was very proud and would do her best to present Serbia to the world next year with dignity and great love, and to open its doors to visitors.

“Thank you once again for the invitation,” Janković told President Vučić.

President Vučić presented the celebrated Serbian tennis player with a jewelry box featuring motifs from Dušan’s Code, while Janković gave him a tennis racket.
