Experts in shock: "Unprecedented" — This has never been recorded, and 2027 could be even worse
The UK Met Office has warned that the developing El Niño phenomenon over the Pacific Ocean is likely to become the strongest in living memory. Forecasts indicate an exceptionally powerful event, with significant impacts on global weather patterns.
This powerful natural climate phenomenon causes global temperatures to rise and can increase the risk of extreme weather events, according to BBC Weather.
Combined with the effects of human-induced climate change, the UK Met Office says 2027 is very likely to be the warmest year globally since records began.
“We need to be clear: this is an unprecedented event,” said Professor Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the UK Met Office.
“I have never seen such a strong El Niño signal in our forecasts.”
The link between climate change and El Niño
There is no clear evidence that climate change increases the likelihood of El Niño occurring, but its impact on weather patterns is likely to be more extreme in a warming world.
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that typically occurs every two to seven years and lasts for about a year.
Scientists generally declare an El Niño event when sea-surface temperatures in a key region of the Pacific Ocean are 0.5°C or more above the long-term average.
