"If you don't resolve the crisis in Ceuta within 30 days…"
The president of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, has threatened to take the Spanish government to court and appeal to other relevant state authorities if the ongoing migrant crisis is not resolved within 30 days, Spanish media reported.
“In early August, the Spanish government tried to sugarcoat reality by claiming that it had restored normality. What followed was almost complete passivity in taking measures to return to normality,” Vivas said at a press conference following an emergency government meeting, according to El País.
He said a possible reason for the Spanish government’s inaction could be a desire “not to upset the neighbor in order to preserve quasi-good relations,” and that, as a result, it was not acting with the necessary determination and firmness.
“I hope that is not the reason, but I am speaking from the heart. My intention is to bring the situation to the attention of the President of the Supreme Court and the President of the Constitutional Court if they are willing to receive me. Ceuta is living in a state of emergency,” Vivas said, adding that he was giving the government “30 days for everything to change.”
Vivas claims that, following the mass influx of migrants into Ceuta, the government tried to sugarcoat the situation by claiming that normality had been restored within 48 hours and that only 2,500 of the 80,000 migrants who entered the city remained.
Vivas estimates that between 8,000 and 10,000 migrants are still in Ceuta.
