Ceuta in critical situation; Thousands of migrants still in the city
The president of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa, Juan Jesús Vivas, said today that around 6,000 migrants are still "wandering" the city, unable to meet their basic needs, following last week's mass influx of migrants.
Vivas said that around 80,000 migrants entered Ceuta during last week's mass influx, a figure that is 8,000 higher than the number reported by Spain's Ministry of the Interior, according to Mundo.
He added that Ceuta is currently caring for 1,100 unaccompanied minors, compared with 180 who were under its guardianship before the beginning of July.
Vivas also stressed that, under Spanish law, Ceuta has the capacity to care for no more than 90 unaccompanied minors.
"We are in a critical situation. We are asking the rest of Spain for help," Vivas said, adding that morale among Ceuta's residents is very low.
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta, together with Melilla, forms the European Union's only land border with Africa and is a frequent destination for migrants seeking to enter EU territory.
