Iran: "The ceasefire is over"
Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the overnight U.S. airstrikes on Tehran, saying the attacks have made the ceasefire agreement “practically meaningless”.
“The illegal and criminal attacks by the United States in the past few hours not only represent a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental rules of international law regarding respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, but have also made the ceasefire reached on April 8 practically meaningless,” the statement of the ministry says, as reported by Iranian media.
This strong reaction from Tehran came after the U.S. military launched a new wave of precision airstrikes for the second night in a row, using naval and air combat aircraft to target sites across Iran, including the Alborz province, as well as civilian infrastructure such as a water facility in the village of Bemani on the country’s southern coast.
Washington justified these operations as self-defense following the earlier downing of an American Apache attack helicopter, and President Donald Trump said the strikes would continue at full intensity if Iran refuses to sign the proposed peace agreement.
Iran immediately responded to the U.S. attacks with massive missile strikes, firing ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. military positions and air bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
Despite the intense two-day exchange of fire and the temporary closure of regional airspace, diplomatic sources confirm that negotiations on a preliminary agreement and the unfreezing of billions of dollars of Iranian assets are still ongoing, with Qatari mediators only leaving Tehran this morning after overnight meetings with Iranian officials.
