Russian Embassy: "Storm" is the most tragic chapter of the recent history of the Balkans

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Belgrade stated today that Operation "Storm," carried out by Croatian armed forces with Western support in August 1995, became one of the most tragic chapters in the recent history of the Balkans.

It stated that most of those responsible for what it described as ethnic cleansing have still not received deserved punishment, adding that it considers NATO and European Union countries to bear particular responsibility for the bloodshed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, claiming that their involvement contributed to the breakup of the country and the escalation of ethnic conflicts, Sputnik reported.

"The culmination of this destructive policy was the illegal aggression of the North Atlantic Alliance against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999, carried out without a mandate from the UN Security Council and resulting in numerous casualties, extensive destruction and long-term humanitarian consequences. NATO and the EU continue to act according to double standards, ignoring the principles of equality and justice. The suffering of the Serbian people is usually ignored or minimized, while similar events in other regions receive completely different political and media treatment," the statement said.

The statement emphasized that Russia consistently advocates for the preservation of historical truth and that genuine reconciliation and stability in the Balkans cannot be achieved without an honest assessment of the tragedy suffered by the Serbian people during Operation "Storm."

"The experience of Serbian Krajina clearly demonstrates the catastrophic consequences of encouraging nationalist radicalism. Russia has repeatedly pointed out that since 2014, a similar threat has been looming over the Russian population of Donbas and Novorossiya. Its complete elimination is the most important condition for a lasting resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," the Russian Embassy said in its statement.
