Possible terrorist attack in the heart of Europe; U.S. Citizens have already been warned
The United States has raised its travel advisory level for Belgium to Level 2, urging its citizens to exercise increased caution due to risks related to crime, terrorism and possible civil unrest.
Meanwhile, Belgian authorities say that their security services are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, The Brussels Times reported today.
The U.S. State Department has raised its travel advisory for Belgium to Level 2 — "Exercise Increased Caution" — urging American citizens to remain especially vigilant while in the country due to risks related to crime, terrorism and possible civil unrest.
Belgian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Florinda Baleci told The Brussels Times that issuing travel advisories is the sole responsibility of each individual country.
She emphasized that Belgian security services are working together to ensure "the highest level of safety for everyone on Belgian territory, including residents and visitors."
U.S. authorities also warn that Belgium faces a risk of terrorist violence, including possible terrorist attacks and other activities linked to terrorism.
The State Department has also warned of the possibility of civil unrest, noting that mass protests related to domestic political issues occasionally take place in Belgium.
The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory system has four levels. The third level recommends that travelers reconsider visiting a country, while the fourth level advises against traveling there.
