The two teams will meet on Wednesday at the stadium in Atlanta, where England will attempt to eliminate the reigning world champions and reach their first World Cup final since 1966.

Atlanta police said that a larger number of security personnel would be deployed during the match, especially around the stadium, fan zones, and other locations expected to attract large crowds.

"Additional personnel and resources have already been deployed throughout the city to ensure that all citizens and visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience during this historic event," the police said in a statement.

Authorities emphasized that the measures are aimed at protecting the public, preventing potential incidents, and maintaining public order.

Historical rivalry brings additional tensions

The England–Argentina clash has long gone beyond the boundaries of sport due to historical events, most notably the Falklands War in 1982, which left a deep mark on relations between the two countries.

After Argentina’s 3–2 victory over Egypt in the round of 16, several Argentine players were filmed singing a supporters’ song that mentions the Falkland Islands, Diego Maradona, and Lionel Messi.

Maradona scored the famous “Hand of God” goal against England at the 1986 World Cup, while Lionel Messi will face England for the first time in his illustrious international career at a World Cup.

“This is just football”

The Argentine Association of Falklands War Veterans called on fans to separate sport from politics.

"Sovereignty is defended through diplomacy, historical truth, and peaceful means. We believe it is important to clearly separate sporting passion from national issues. The ball keeps rolling, pride in our colors grows, but the memory remains," the veterans said.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also attempted to lower tensions ahead of the highly anticipated match.

"This is just a football game. Let football do the talking on the pitch," said the Three Lions goalkeeper.

British police, meanwhile, praised the behavior of England fans currently in the United States but expressed concern over more than 500 football-related incidents reported across the United Kingdom over the past weekend.

Most of the unrest occurred after England’s 2–1 extra-time victory over Norway, with more than 100 people arrested on that occasion.

Because of all these factors, the England–Argentina match will not only be a football spectacle but also one of the most demanding security events of this year’s World Cup.
