The Hague: Thaçi's detention extended

The judge determined that risks remain that the accused could obstruct the proceedings or commit further criminal offenses, according to a statement published on the website of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.

Four other former members of the so-called KLA are also accused in this case — Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu and Hajredin Kuçi.

According to the indictment, between April 12 and November 2, 2023, during separate non-privileged visits at the detention facility, Hashim Thaçi provided Smakaj, Kilaj, Fazliu and Kuçi with confidential information about prosecution witnesses in a separate case against Thaçi involving war crimes charges. The indictment alleges that he instructed them to influence the testimony of prosecution witnesses and gave them detailed guidance on how to do so.

Thaçi is charged with three counts of attempting to obstruct an official person in the performance of official duties through participation in a joint action by a group, four counts of violating the secrecy of proceedings, and four counts of contempt of court.

In a separate case, he and three other former leaders of the so-called KLA — Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi — are on trial over charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The verdict in that case is scheduled to be delivered on September 16.

The so-called KLA, described as a terrorist organization by the Serbian authorities, committed numerous crimes, killings and abductions during 1998 and 1999 against members of the army and police forces of the then Yugoslavia, Serbs and other non-Albanians, as well as Albanians who refused to accept becoming its supporters or members.
