“During the meeting, we felt that the American side understands China’s position and attaches importance to China’s concerns and, like the international community, does not support or accept Taiwan’s pursuit of independence,” Wang told Chinese state media after the meeting between the American and Chinese leaders, CNN reports.

Wang reiterated that the Taiwan issue is “the most important issue in China–U.S. relations” and that it affects the overall bilateral relationship.

He also called on Washington to adhere to the “One China” principle and previous joint statements between the two countries.

“We hope the American side will abide by the One China principle and the three joint communiqués between China and the United States and fulfill its international obligations,” the Chinese foreign minister said.

The Chinese side insists on the interpretation that Taiwan is part of its territory and opposes any form of international recognition or support for the island’s independence.

U.S. President Trump said during talks with Chinese leadership that he “did not make any commitments” regarding Taiwan, while the State Department stated that U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged.

Washington emphasizes that it continues to maintain the official “One China” policy, while also having informal relations with Taiwan and providing it with political and security support. Taiwanese authorities said they are closely monitoring developments and maintaining open channels of communication with the United States, noting that long-standing U.S. policy toward the island has not changed.
