Eyes of the world on Beijing – They have met; Xi warns Trump: "It could lead to war" PHOTO
Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted an official welcome ceremony for U.S. President Donald Trump in front of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, featuring a red carpet, a military orchestra, an honor guard, and a ceremonial salute in Tiananmen Square.
He added that global stability is tied to the stability of relations between Washington and Beijing, stating that the world is at “a new crossroads,” marked by turbulence and uncertainty.
During his remarks, Xi also mentioned the concept of the “Thucydides Trap,” a theory in international relations describing the danger of war when a rising power begins to challenge a dominant global power, most commonly used to describe the potential conflict between the United States and China.
In doing so, he warned of the danger of conflict between a rising power and an already established one.
He said that the international community is asking whether China and the United States can avoid such a scenario and develop a new model of relations between major powers.
“Great leader”
The American president said that relations between the two countries would be “better than ever.”
“We will have a fantastic future together. It is an honor to be with you. It is an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the United States will be better than ever before,” Trump said.
He emphasized that he has “known the Chinese leader for a long time” and described Xi as a “great leader.”
“I tell everyone that you are a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like that I say it, but I say it anyway, because it’s true,” Trump said, addressing the Chinese president.
“A very dangerous situation”
Xi Jinping told Donald Trump that the issue of the Chinese region of Taiwan could lead to conflict between China and the United States if it is “handled incorrectly,” Chinese state media reported.
During the bilateral summit with Trump in Beijing, Xi said that Taiwan is “the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,” according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
“If handled incorrectly, the two nations could come into conflict or even clash, pushing the entire China-U.S. relationship into a very dangerous situation,” the Chinese president said, CNN reported.
Trump is on a state visit to China for the first time since 2017.
