"This was the biggest robbery in World Cup history!"

Spanish journalist Manolo Lama did not hold back after Argentina’s dramatic Round of 16 victory over Egypt at the World Cup, calling it “the biggest refereeing scandal in favor of one national team in World Cup history.”

Lama believes Egypt was seriously wronged in several key moments and that the officiating ultimately decided the winner of one of the best matches of the tournament.

“Today I witnessed Argentina’s great comeback—and one of the biggest robberies FIFA has ever carried out in the world of football.”

He was particularly critical of Egypt’s disallowed goal.

“What FIFA did to Egypt is the biggest disgrace I have ever seen in my life. They let play continue, we saw the goal, everything was over, and then someone in the VAR room decided to review it, and they disallowed Egypt’s goal.”

The Spanish journalist also argued that the referees should have reviewed the incidents inside Argentina’s penalty area.

“As for Argentina’s third goal, there were two situations that should have been reviewed. There was a clear shirt pull and a foul on an Egyptian player with no attempt to play the ball, followed by contact with Salah’s leg inside the penalty area.”

However, Lama stressed that he does not necessarily believe those incidents should have been ruled as fouls. Rather, his issue was with the inconsistent application of the rules.

“In my opinion, there was neither a foul that justified disallowing Egypt’s goal nor a penalty on Salah. The problem is that one incident was reviewed, while the other wasn’t.”

In the end, he drew a comparison with some of the most controversial moments in World Cup history.

“I saw Maradona’s hand, I saw Thierry Henry’s goal… But what I saw today was the biggest robbery in history.”

However, he stressed that his criticism was not directed at the Argentine national team or Lionel Messi.

“That does not mean Argentina did not deserve to win or that Messi is not the best player in the world. He is the greatest in history, but the referee and the VAR official have brought shame on football.”
