"This was the biggest robbery in World Cup history!"
Spanish journalist Manolo Lama did not hold back after Argentina’s dramatic Round of 16 victory over Egypt at the World Cup, calling it “the biggest refereeing scandal in favor of one national team in World Cup history.”
The Spanish journalist also argued that the referees should have reviewed the incidents inside Argentina’s penalty area.
“As for Argentina’s third goal, there were two situations that should have been reviewed. There was a clear shirt pull and a foul on an Egyptian player with no attempt to play the ball, followed by contact with Salah’s leg inside the penalty area.”
However, Lama stressed that he does not necessarily believe those incidents should have been ruled as fouls. Rather, his issue was with the inconsistent application of the rules.
“In my opinion, there was neither a foul that justified disallowing Egypt’s goal nor a penalty on Salah. The problem is that one incident was reviewed, while the other wasn’t.”
