At least eight people have been killed in two traffic accidents that occurred on the M1 motorway in Hungary, near Győr.

Around 4:30 a.m. this morning, a truck collided with a construction machine at the 114th kilometer of the M1 motorway, according to Magyar Nemzet.

The vehicle caught fire after the impact, and the truck driver died at the scene.

Shortly after, around 5:15 a.m., a minibus collided with a truck that had been stopped due to the earlier accident at the 113th kilometer.

There were nine people in the minibus; seven died at the scene and two were injured.

At the 115th kilometer, a truck also crashed into several stationary machines.

The vehicle pushed the machines into one another, after which its cabin caught fire, and the flames then spread to the cargo.

Firefighters from Győr who arrived at the scene began extinguishing the blaze using two water jets, which prevented further spread of the fire.

On behalf of the government, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He stated in a Facebook post that the victims were foreign nationals, but did not specify their nationality, and police did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters.

Police told the media that all of the deceased were adult men, that the minibus had Moldovan registration plates, and that the truck involved in the first accident also had Moldovan registration plates.
