Chaos in Germany: "Ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin color"
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused the Alternative for Germany (AfD) of supporting Russia against Germany’s interests and advocating an anti-immigration policy that amounts to “ethnic cleansing.”
Merz addressed the German parliament after his party suffered a heavy defeat to the AfD, which won last weekend’s election in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt on an anti-immigration platform.
“People with a migrant background also work in skilled trades. If what is being advocated here—namely ‘remigration’—were to become reality, it would be nothing other than a synonym for ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin color,” Merz said on Wednesday during a general debate in the Bundestag.
“One in six skilled workers holds a foreign passport. If things unfolded as the AfD intends, skilled workers in Germany would no longer be able to work, no nursing home would be able to operate, no hospital would be able to function, and no restaurant in Germany would be able to operate. That would be the result of your remigration policy,” he said, addressing the AfD parliamentary group.
The AfD lawmakers loudly protested, while members of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group applauded.
Although there is a “consensus within the coalition” that many people still do not have the right to permanent residence in Germany and that more people should be deported, Merz said that “we carefully distinguish between those who work in Germany, contribute to our prosperity and are welcome in Germany, and those who do not have permanent residence and must leave our country again.”
“The government carefully makes this distinction, unlike the AfD,” he said.
The AfD did not respond to a Reuters request for comment, but has previously dismissed extremism allegations as an attempt to spread fear and insult its voters.
Allegations of “election fraud” in Saxony-Anhalt
Following the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, the chancellor accused the AfD of misleading voters. He acknowledged that the AfD had achieved an exceptional election result in every respect, but said it had failed to achieve its primary goal of securing an absolute majority of seats.
“Fifty-six percent of voters in Saxony-Anhalt did not vote for you,” Merz said.
“The voters spoke very clearly. They also sent me a clear message. But the AfD failed to secure an absolute majority. And you will not achieve that in Germany either. You will not win a majority anywhere in Germany with this policy,” Merz said, addressing AfD leader Alice Weidel. “You are and will remain a destructive force.”
Merz on Ukraine and Russia
Merz also claimed today that an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport had been prepared in Russia over an extended period and that a major disaster had only narrowly been avoided.
“This attack was planned in Russia for months and was directly aimed at Germany, and it was only by sheer luck that major material damage and loss of life were prevented,” Merz said in the lower house of parliament, Reuters reported.
Merz has also previously criticized the AfD’s position on the war in Ukraine.
“We support Ukraine and will continue to support it because it is also defending our freedom,” Merz said, accusing AfD leader Alice Weidel of reversing the roles of “perpetrator and victim” in the war.
“The only thing that truly threatens Russia and Putin is the power of democracy. And yet, you clearly remain firmly on Russia’s side,” Merz said, addressing the AfD parliamentary group.
Weidel: “Citizens want political change”
AfD leader Alice Weidel had earlier launched a fierce attack on the federal government and the chancellor in her speech. She claimed that Merz had not merely been punished in Saxony-Anhalt, but that the CDU had been “crushed,” during her first direct encounter with the chancellor since Sunday’s election.
“Merz has not understood the message from voters in Saxony-Anhalt. But that is irrelevant anyway, because your time is already up. Citizens want political change, and they will get it,” Weidel said. She reiterated her party’s goal of governing at the federal level in the foreseeable future.
In her speech, Weidel also attacked the government’s migration policy, blaming it for crime and domestic security problems in the country. On foreign policy, she accused the federal government of “war propaganda” and escalating the conflict with Russia. The AfD leader also repeated her criticism of the government’s energy policy, arguing that the energy transition is suffocating the economy.
“The energy transition is a wasteful squandering of money,” she said.
