Chaos in central Athens: Residential building collapses; Rescuers search for people trapped under rubble PHOTO
A four-story residential building collapsed suddenly in Athens today, with authorities fearing that four people may be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue teams search for survivors as investigators suspect that nearby construction work may have caused collapse
Around 30 firefighters with eight fire engines, a specialized rescue vehicle, and two search dogs from EMAK Unit 1 have been deployed to the scene. Police officers, emergency medical personnel, and utility crews responsible for the electricity and water networks are also taking part in the operation.
The response also includes three ambulance crews, a mobile medical unit, and an EKAB emergency motorcycle team, while Gennimatas, Sotiria, and Tzaneio hospitals have been placed on standby.
Meanwhile, five construction workers and the owner of the adjacent construction site have been taken into custody as authorities investigate the circumstances under which the work was being carried out. Officials are also examining whether the developer possessed a valid building permit.
According to available information, a permit had been issued for the construction of a five-story building, while the four-story building that collapsed contained seven apartments.
