According to the NBS, the drone entered Latvian airspace as a result of Russian electronic warfare, the Delfi news portal reported. NATO fighter jets assigned to patrol the airspace of the Baltic states were scrambled and subsequently shot down the aircraft.

Latvian authorities also issued air-raid warnings this morning for the regions of Balvi, Rēzekne, Preiļi and Augšdaugava, followed later by a warning for Alūksne. The warnings were lifted at around 4:50 a.m.

The NBS said that an investigation into the incident is underway. It has not been disclosed how close the drone was to populated areas or where its wreckage fell.

The Finnish Defence Forces have also introduced temporary restrictions on air and maritime traffic in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland as a precautionary measure due to a potential drone threat, Yle reported.

The incident occurred following Ukrainian drone attacks on the St. Petersburg area. Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said the attack sparked a fire at the Ust-Luga oil terminal and that Russian forces intercepted more than 50 drones in the St. Petersburg area overnight.
