Dejan Stanković set to leave Red Star Belgrade?

According to several Serbian media outlets, Stanković allegedly resigned after the elimination by Hapoel Be’er Sheva and said goodbye to the players in the dressing room, effectively bringing an end to his second spell in charge of the Red-Whites.

Just before midnight, Red Star announced that an emergency meeting of the club’s Board of Directors would be held on Wednesday at noon, with Stanković’s decision expected to be confirmed at the meeting.

“Dear colleagues, I would like to inform you that the club will hold an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors tomorrow at noon,” the club said in a message it circulated.

Stanković has thus ended his second stint at Red Star following elimination by the Israeli club in the Champions League qualifiers.

The first time he left the Red-Whites was in 2022, when he resigned after losing to Maccabi Haifa in the qualifying rounds for Europe’s elite competition. He was succeeded by Miloš Milojević.

He returned to Marakana late last year, when he was officially unveiled on December 22 as the successor to Vladan Milojević. However, his second spell did not last long either.

Following the painful elimination by Hapoel Be’er Sheva, during which he was shown a red card, Stanković decided to resign and bring his latest spell at the club to an end. He leaves a lasting legacy at Red Star, both as a player and as a coach.

Red Star now has to act quickly, with the team facing the Europa League qualifying play-offs. The Serbian champions will face Viktoria Plzeň in the next round, meaning the club will have to find a new head coach in the coming days.
