Horrific accident in Hungary: Bus full of passengers crashes into ditch; Many dead PHOTO

"12 people were killed and at least 10 seriously injured when a Polish bus crashed into a ditch on the M3 motorway," Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said, according to the Hungarian news portal Index.hu.

Hungarian Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai confirmed that a large number of police officers and firefighters were at the scene, while civilian assistance had also arrived to help move the damaged vehicle.

"In addition to the 12 people who lost their lives in the accident, another 47 people were traveling on the bus, several of whom were seriously injured. The bus driver has been detained," Pósfai said.

The bus overturned on the M3 motorway toward Nyíregyháza, between Mezőkeresztes and Mezőnagymihály, early Sunday morning, the disaster management authorities said.

"Units already at the scene entered the vehicle through the bus windows and are continuously rescuing passengers," the statement said. 

The disaster management authority said firefighters have so far rescued 35 people from the bus, while several passengers remain trapped underneath the vehicle.

The bus crashed into a ditch and overturned early this morning near the town of Mezőkeresztes, on the M3 motorway. Police said the vehicle was traveling toward Nyíregyháza. Hungary’s state news agency MTI reported that there were 57 passengers and two drivers on board.

Police said the bus veered into a ditch on a straight section of the road before overturning. “Preliminary information indicates that the driver may have fallen asleep,” the police said in a statement published on their website.
