As stated, Dragoljub Mićunović, who led the party after its re-establishment in 1990, belonged to a generation of people who understood the price of freedom because they paid for it personally, but who never gave up the struggle for a democratic Serbia.

“For the Democratic Party, his name remains part of our identity, our renewal, and our obligation to continue the fight for a Serbia of free citizens, strong institutions, and democratic values. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers, and all democrats. May he rest in peace,” the statement from the Democratic Party said.

Dragoljub Mićunović was born in 1930 near Kuršumlija. During World War II, he lived as a refugee in Merdare, and at the age of 18 he was sent to Goli Otok without indictment or trial.

After leaving the camp, he completed high school and later graduated in Philosophy from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 1954. He then worked for a time as a philosophy and psychology teacher in Kruševac, and in the early 1960s became an assistant at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in the Department of Philosophy.

In early 1975, he was expelled from the university, where he returned 15 years later.

He was a member of numerous professional journals, lectured at universities in the United States and Germany, and published five books and more than 100 academic papers.

Dragoljub Mićunović began his political career at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1968 as a leader of the student movement and one of the leaders of the protests. Because of this, he was arrested, had his passport confiscated, and was banned from teaching at the university and publishing papers in Yugoslavia.

He was also one of the initiators behind the founding of the first opposition party, the Democratic Party, whose president he became in 1990.

In the first multi-party elections in 1990, he was elected as a member of the Serbian parliament, and two years later he also became a member of the Chamber of Republics of the Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Dragoljub Mićunović was removed from the position of president of the Democratic Party in 1994, and two years later, in 1996, he formed a new political party — Democratic Centre. At the beginning of 1999, he helped form the DAN coalition, which consisted of the Democratic Centre, Democratic Alternative, and New Democracy.

At the end of 1999, Mićunović was one of the initiators of uniting Serbian opposition parties into a single bloc, which in January 2000 led to the creation of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS).

After DOS won the 2000 elections, Dragoljub Mićunović was elected president of the Chamber of Citizens of the Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Following the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 2003, he was elected president of the Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro. That same year, he was the DOS candidate in the unsuccessful Serbian presidential election, where in the first round he received fewer votes than Tomislav Nikolić, the candidate of the Serbian Radical Party.

In December of that year, during the snap parliamentary elections in Serbia, he was elected as a member of the Serbian parliament.

He also served as a member of the Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro and was the honorary president of the Democratic Party.

Ogromno nalazište nafte postaje nova meta energetskih divova
