Earlier, authorities said that the attacker had killed a teacher and wounded four people, including three students.

The incident was reported at around 10 a.m. at a school in Bang Kruai district, after which police and special forces were dispatched to the scene to bring the situation under control, according to the Nation Thailand website.

The Nonthaburi Provincial Incident Command Center previously stated that the attacker was believed to be a student, that he was armed with a handgun, and that he was inside the school, which led to the deployment of special forces.

Thai police later announced that the attacker had died by suicide.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

“This is truly horrifying; it should never have happened. I am not only sorry for the victims, but I am also deeply saddened that this occurred. How can this happen in our country?” the prime minister said.

He emphasized that the government does not allow citizens to possess firearms.

One student told Reuters that at first he thought the sounds of gunfire were firecrackers or banging noises.

"At first, I didn’t think it was a gun. I heard shots, then everything went quiet. Then it started again,” the student said.
