Complete chaos in Greece: Ukrainian drone found near Lefkada was full of explosives; NATO urgently notified

Gerapetritis said after talks in Athens with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman that the Mediterranean must remain a “zone of peace” free of military operations, Kathimerini reported.

“There will be no tolerance for any attempt to turn the Mediterranean into a theater of military operations,” Gerapetritis said, adding that Greece “will ensure the Mediterranean remains a sea of peace belonging to its peoples.”

The incident has caused concern in Athens after a naval drone was discovered last week near Lefkada, which Greek authorities suspect is of Ukrainian origin and was intended for an attack on a Russian vessel in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to Greek officials, it is a so-called “kamikaze” drone of the “Mamayi” type, similar to those used by Ukrainian forces in the Black Sea, and the vessel was allegedly equipped with explosives.

Ukraine has repeatedly denied any information about the drone, while the investigation into its origin and mission is still ongoing at facilities in Skaramagas near Athens.

Greek national defense authorities are leading the investigation, while coast guard units participated in initial checks, including the removal of explosives and detonators from the device, which was transferred under military supervision.

Athens has informed NATO and EU allies about the case, expressing concern that the conflict from the Black Sea could spread to the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas.

Greek officials also warn of possible economic and environmental consequences in the event of an attack near the coast, including risks to commercial tankers in the region.
